Three reasons why mentorship matters

No (wo)man is an island, and it’s very rare that you can achieve anything all by yourself. At some point in time you’ll need some help from someone who is (or has been) where you want to be. That’s where a mentor comes in to play.

Luckily I was blessed to find the Yoda to my Luke Skywalker- Jennifer! Jennifer definitely isn’t stingy with her know-how and she’s happy to share what she’s learned throughout her career with me. And not only is Jennifer generous, she’s also fun!

Want to know what makes Jennifer, and other mentors, so awesome? Here are three reasons why mentorship matters!

1. They remind you that you’re not in it alone, and you won’t be in it forever

When I’m freaking out about something or feeling like I’m not accomplishing enough, Jennifer assures me that I’m not alone, recalling similar times in her life that she eventually got over. Hearing that a successful person has gone through what I’m currently going through is always a nice motivational boost, and a reminder that I won’t be where I am forever.

2. They give great advice and offer shortcuts

Good mentors don’t want you to struggle through the crap they went through. They’ll offer you shortcuts and tell you how to get where you want to go, without all the surprises, winding paths and forks in the road.

I once worked for a woman who didn’t want to share anything about her success because she didn’t want competition. That’s lame. There’s enough success to go around!

3. They open you up to a whole new world

Mentors can introduce you to the people you need to know to succeed. Seriously, I’ve gone places and talked with people I never would have before I met Jennifer. Like I said, it’s not likely that you can do anything all by yourself, so every person you meet is an opportunity to elevate!

I’m sure there are a million more reasons why finding a mentor should be pretty high up on your list of to-dos, but these are my top three! Do you have a mentor? Shout them out in the comments below! Oh, and be sure to check out Jennifer’s marketing blog, Smart Cookie Blogger.
